Crestron and Amazon’s Alexa for a futuristic voice controlled smart home

Crestron is one of the global pioneers when it comes to home and commercial automation. They sport an impressive range of automation equipment that is loved by AV integrators worldwide. The company now strengthens its hold by announcing easy compatibility with Amazon’s increasingly popular Alexa-integrated devices.

Crestron Technology Professionals can now use Alexa Voice Service to develop voice controlled scenes and settings that can be customised to meet the client’s requirement. This integration allows users to choose from an unending range of voice control options to operate lights, AV, temperature, security and much more.

“Crestron customers expect a truly integrated home technology experience. We’ve been collaborating very closely with Amazon Alexa engineers to make sure we offer an uncompromising voice control experience that is every bit as seamless and satisfying as tapping a button on a beautiful Crestron touch screen, remote control, or designer keypad.

You can ask Alexa to set the mood for dinner, or to play a movie in the bedroom, or let her know it’s too cold in the bathroom. Just say the word and your Crestron system responds immediately.”, quotes John Clancy, VP of residential systems at Crestron.

Crestron Technology Professionals can define and deploy Amazon Alexa skills using new software modules that interface with both the Alexa Skills Kit SDK & Smart Home Skill API. These modules are for use with homes and offices running Crestron 3-Series processors and Crestron Pyng App for smartphones, tablets and other devices.

Simultaneously, Amazon is aggressively making Alexa accessible to a huge list of third-party developers. Whether it is creating their own Alexa “skill” that allows users to give the voice assistant new capabilities, or incorporating the advanced software application into their own devices via Amazon’s free Alexa Voice Service licensing program, these third parties bring their customers on board with the virtual assistant, fuelling the demand for Alexa-enabled devices such as Echo and Echo dot.

Amazon clearly understands and acknowledges Google’s entry into this segment earlier this year. To ensure its foothold in this segment, Amazon is building an army of Alexa devices. Alexa has already been adopted by other leading home automation equipment manufacturers such as Lutron and Control4.

For the end-users, it translates into an enriched smart home solution and ability to be part of future home controlled by your voice, just like Star Trek. Here’s to smarter homes and offices of the future! Live long and prosper.
